It is hard to believe that the time is here to start thinking about the holidays and everything they bring. One large part of the holidays is the quest to find “the perfect gift.” And so the shopping begins!
The thing is, as a parent or caregiver to a child with special needs, be them younger or older, finding a perfect gift can be extra challenging. I know this from personal experience, as I have three children, with my middle child having special needs. She is 23 years old currently, and she is the reason I learned a skill I did not previously possess when shopping for my neurotypical children.
That skill is the ability to look at a toy or item. While seeing its intended use, typically that listed (on the package itself), I can then see its secondary or “hidden” use, the one that could help Elizabeth with some of her special needs. For example: Maybe that new music CD will encourage singing will help with her speech sounds? Or knowing that the down blanket, while cozy, is also heavy enough to double for a weighted blanket. Or recognizing that that packet of fun stickers can help her fine motor skills as she peels them off the paper.
With that in mind, the list I put together is one I made for sharing with you as examples of some pretty fun toys and gift items and how those same toys can help our special children.
Our children can then enjoy the fun of the toy and not know they are working at all. The skill development can be a hidden benefit in good fun that they will want to do over and over again.
