Kim Martinez, an advisor for Stand Up for Independence on the “Treasure Coast” of Florida, takes 15 young adults in a 15-seat passenger van on trips around the state. All of this traveling has allowed Kim to develop some packing “hacks” to make everyone’s life a little less complicated while traveling. She has taught her group how to pack using smaller bags and shares her experience with us.

Stand Up for Independence [1] is a self-advocacy group on the Treasure Coast. They travel to the state capital in Tallahassee and state-wide conferences (like the annual Family Café in Orlando [2]). They also go to different events to teach independence, get better provider rates, and do different things in the community to teach persons with developmental disabilities to be independent. This independence also helps them to advocate for themselves.

Learning how to pack efficiently has become necessary when one travels this much. It’s necessary when you are in a 15-passenger van with no storage space. So, the goal is to be able to ride comfortably without carrying luggage on your lap, for example (I’m sure we have all done that once in our lives on trips). Kim has developed a simplified way to pack and teach others to pack, which she shares with us. She has some creative ideas and ways to make the task of packing easier for us all. [4]

3 hacks you will be able to take away from Kim’s video.
