Inclusive Parks
Summertime is here, which means it’s time to get out and play and even explore some cool stuff along the way.
An inexpensive way to get out and have fun is by visiting parks and playgrounds, whether they are near or far, we’ve created a list of inclusive and assessable playgrounds worth seeing this summer.
Coming in at number 10… Brooklyn’s Playground in Pocatello, Idaho.
Brooklyn’s Playground was named after Brooklyn Fisher, a girl with spina bifida. The idea behind this playground is that when Brooklyn was young her father took her to the park and sat her on his lap to swing, because there was no back support for him, they fell, and Brooklyn hurt her head! It was then the family decided they needed a park that was more accommodating for children like Brooklyn. With wide ramps for wheelchairs to access and supportive swings this playground is sure to be a hit!
Number 9 – Fairmount Carousel Playground in Riverside, California
Who doesn’t like a good carnival theme? This playground features a slide, musical equipment, a splash pad, a carousel and sensory experiences. This one-of-a-kind play experience was created in partnership with Shane’s Inspiration, meaning that kids of ALL abilities can visit this inclusive carnival-themed playground.
Number 8 – Signal Centers Therapeutic Playground for the Arts in Chattanooga, Tennessee
This park lives up to its name! This playground was designed especially for children with special abilities. In fact, childcare specialists, teachers, staff, and professionals in the fields of licensing, safety and accessibility helped design this playground. Another feature that makes this playground special is the abundance of natural elements –over 50 species of shrubs, plants, and trees – for a truly multi-sensory experience.
Number 7 – Rocket Park – Grand Junction, Colorado
This Playground facility has ramps that roam all over the park so that all kids can play on the equipment. The walk pad is decorated with retro-looking rockets and stars to tie into the Outer Space Theme. Other attractions include interactive games, “rocket control” panels, multi-sensory toys, and accessible swings. This playground is sure to be out of this world!
Number 6 – Jacob’s Park – Boynton Beach, Florida
Our Shooting Star
This Playground is a tribute to Jacob Rappoport, who in 2002 passed away because of spinal muscular atrophy, when he was less than a year old. To raise awareness about his condition his parents created the Jacob Isaac Rappoport Foundation. Jacob’s parents teamed up with GameTime, who designed the inclusive playground. It features ramps, slides, sensory equipment, and smooth surfacing.
Number 5 – Zachary’s Playground – Lake St. Louis, Missouri
This Castle themed Playground is stacked with awesome features. A few to mention are the swings, they have ADA accessible swings, traditional swings, and swings for toddlers. There is a waterplay feature with a fully accessible splash pad perfect for summer. A music section which promotes audible stimulation and creativity. Lastly a climbing net which includes custom seats. You won’t want to miss this!
Number 4 – Playground Without Limits in Houston, Texas
If there is one thing we can agree on it’s that summer is hot, especially in Texas. Which is one of the reasons this park is on our list! Playground Without Limit utilizes awnings that provide ample amount of shade! Which help make this spot even more cool. The playground’s equipment is extraordinary, and it was built to exceeds ADA requirements so that all children can play together in one place. Anyone can walk, crawl or roll up the equipment… and the side railings go all the way to the base… so kids cannot slip out.
Number 3 – Tatum’s Garden – Salinas, California
Tatum’s Garden was inspired by 3-year-old Tatum Bakker, who has spina bifida. If you’ve been paying attention this story might remind you of another park mention. If you’re thinking Brooklyn’s Playground in Pocatello, Idaho then your correct. Tatum’s garden was inspired by Brooklyn’s Playground. Each section on this playground is unique and offer everyone a chance to play. Included are slides, ramps, inclusive swings and more.
Number 2 – Helen Diller Playground – San Francisco, California

This playground is fun for the whole family! Included is an enormous 45-foot-long slide, plenty of swings, bongo drums, a giant xylophone, several climbing facilities, a raised sand table, and more. There’s even a pair of wheelchair-friendly play boats, so that kids of all abilities can play pirates and other make-believe games.
Coming in at Number 1 is….. Clemyjontri Park in Fairfax County, Virginia
Your kids are bound to have BIG fun here at the Clemyjontri Park, it stretched over 2 acres and has a rainbow color-scheme. That facility is split into four sections. The play park’s centerpiece is a carousel, which children can even use while still seated in wheelchairs. Their swings have high backs, arm rests and are equipped with safety features. The equipment is designed to be sensory rich so children can be inspired to play in a more creative way!
