Public vs Private: Our Experience

Our 12-year-old attended a public head start program at age four. Her teacher was able to reach her and even had her ahead of her class when she started kindergarten. However, our public kindergarten is every other day. It wasn’t consistent enough and she fell behind. In 1st grade, her teacher didn’t even try. I demanded an IEP and in 2nd grade, she finally started to progress. She leveled off in 5th grade. She has seizures [1] and in the 5th grade, her teacher left her alone in her class seizing for over 20 minutes (…after 2 min you need to call 911). The teacher claimed she was daydreaming, not seizing (she doesn’t sit still long enough to daydream). I pulled her out of school at that point. This year I placed her in a public charter school and she has progressed more this year than the other 6 put together! She participates in a mainstream class, she is reading at a higher level than ever before, and she is making friends! Not exactly a private school but an amazing switch from the “back of the burner” method and neglect she faced in our public school.
