Michael Azzara

“Everyday Hero” for the January/February Issue 2012

I want to nominate my Father-in-law, Mike, as an Everyday Hero.

Ever since my son, Mikey, was diagnose at 19 days of age with Prader-Willi Syndrome [1], Mike has worked tirelessly as an advocate for him and other children with Prader-Willi. He also helps to educate others about the syndrome. Twelve years ago, Mike, and another parent of a child with Prader-Willi, started an annual golf scramble tournament at Meadowink Golf Club in Murrysville, PA. The intention of the tournament was to help raise awareness and money for families, in order to be able to attend conferences that help to educate families about the syndrome and about the support that is also available to these families. Mike also takes care of Mikey four to five times a week so I can go to work.  He has taken Mikey to Special Olympic [2] events, and loves to talk about Mikey and his other grandchild, Tommy. Mike cares about all of the families that have children with Prader-Willi Syndrome and does whatever he can to help to spread the word. For that reason, Mike Azzara is definitely an Everyday Hero
