My mom had just passed away. Logan, my 10 year old son with cognitive disabilities, was in denial; he just couldn’t comprehend she was gone. His dad and I discussed if he needed to go to the funeral home. I am glad we decided he should go. I am so proud of Logan. When he first walked into the room at the funeral home, where his granny was, he was very hesitant and he started to get close but backed off. When he asked if she was dead, we told him she was in heaven and didn’t need her body anymore. I realized that might have been too much for him to comprehend. Logan said “PaPaw…Granny sleeping”? My father told him “yes, she’s sleeping”. Then Logan walked away for a little bit and when we got ready to leave, he went back; it was just him, me, his dad, my dad, my sister and a cousin in there with mom at that time. Logan walked up to mom, started to talk to her, then turns and asks us not to look. He would turn around to see if we were looking and as long as we didn’t look, he continued to talk to his granny. I can’t remember exacts words…Jo Hill (my sister) may remember better… I was a little over-whelmed at the moment, but, he told her bye and he would “see her later”.
Afterwards, we left and then rode around Stevenson Park and showed him all the wonderful Christmas scenes they had lit up. Logan says “mom will I see Granny later? Is she coming back? When can I talk to her again”? I told him he could talk to her anytime. Then I told him to watch; I looked out of the window of the car and said “Granny I know you see all these wonderful Christmas lights, I love you Granny and I know you’re happy in Heaven”. Logan laughed at me. I told him, if he wanted to when he prayed at bedtime, he could talk to her then without us being around. As soon as we got home he went straight to his bedroom, got on his knees at his bed, and I heard him say “Mom you want to talk to Jesus and Granny with me or what”? I actually chuckled to myself…when I managed to get beside him, he was like “mom, not to close! Scoot over where Jesus and Granny can see me”! He giggled a little then said “Jesus, thank you for your Blessings. Granny, this is Logan remember me? Are you there? I know your having fun playing in Heaven, I love you- I love you- I love you- I love you! I see ya later, Jesus I pray, bye”. He then giggled and said “Mom I’m done”. He got up and started playing. I’m very proud of him and glad we decided to let him see mom. I know its going to take a lot of time.
