My daughter with Special Needs is 26 years old, so she is not a “child” per se, but she is my “child” so here goes…
Despite all the dire predictions from the doctors so many years ago (developmental delay, multiple seizure [1] disorder (since outgrown), multiple learning disabilities – including dyslexia [2] , Asperger’s Syndrome [3] to name a few of the “labels” that she’s received), my daughter only very recently read something aloud to me. And it was correct! Despite never being able to read aloud (she has minor birth trauma that has affected her language centre and resulted in a type of aphasia), she has managed to acquire the skill!!! She persevered and kept “reading” in her own way and we never discouraged her despite the fact that she has never “read” a book like others do. Although I’ve never quite understood how her type of “reading” works, I have always encouraged her and continue to buy all the books that she asks for. Somehow, it helped! I love the plasticity of the brain… NEVER GIVE UP on your kids. They will continue to develop and learn and acquire new skills slowly and surely over time. Their journey may be made up of tiny steps, but we all get to the finish line eventually! Be proud and enjoy all the ways that they are different because our lives are enriched by those very differences!
