Lingo: Health & Diet Awareness

In an effort to bring our readers better awareness on health and diet, we thought it would prove helpful to define a few terms that relate to that topic. 

Gluten-Free Diet:

It is a diet completely free of ingredients derived from gluten-containing cereals: wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, and triticale, as well as the use of gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent.

Casein-Free Diet:

It is a diet free of the ingredient (Casein) that is a predominant phosphoprotein that accounts for nearly 80% of proteins in cow milk and cheese

Dan! Doctor:

The Defeat Autism Now (DAN!) project, created by the Autism Research Institute, created an approach to autism treatment called the “DAN! protocol”. Many parents believe that DAN! doctors are the best choice to treat their children with autism, and there are many testimonials to the effectiveness of the treatments. DAN! doctors, however, do often prescribe treatments and diets that mainstream doctors question.

Vegan:

Vegan is a diet and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Vegans endeavor not to use or consume animal products of any kind.

Cross-Contamination:

Cross-Contamination occurs when your hands or a utensil touch something that contains Gluten or Casein, or both, and then your hand or utensil touch food.

FALCPA:

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) requires food manufacturers to disclose in plain language whether products contain any of the top eight food allergens.  This law, which took effect  January 1, 2006, mandates that the labels of foods containing milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, and soy declare the allergen in plain language on the ingredient list or via

HVP:

hydrolysed vegetable protein. Sometimes on food labels, Gluten is listed as modified food starch natural flavoring, or HPV.
