Holiday Highlight: Featuring Christmas Lights
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
In addition to being a wonderful time of year, it is also the most wonderful time to be with family. Each year at this time, families all around the world celebrate Christmas in their own way and with their own traditions. Having a child with disabilities can sometimes make those traditions difficult to do; traditions like ice skating or making ginger bread houses. Last year, my family and I enjoyed something truly special, everyone was able to participate and we couldn’t stop laughing. Our new found tradition is the Christmas lights scavenger hunt. The idea is relatively simple: you make of list of things that relate to Christmas time. For instance, you could include the like The Grinch, all eight reindeer, Santa and Mrs. Claus and so on. This was the highlight of our holiday. We drove around several neighborhoods until we found everything on our checklist and then ended the night back at Grandmas with cookies and hot chocolate.
This particular excursion was great for everyone, not just the little ones. Everyone was able to participate and no one felt excluded. A way to engage everyone is by making a competition out of it; similar to the way our family did. We had four people in the car and the two on the left side of the car (driver’s side) were a team, and the two on the right were a team. Whichever team finished the entire checklist first won. We made sure to go down a neighborhood that wasn’t heavily trafficked and we went around 8:00 P.M. We put our hazards on and went 5-10 MPH so that everyone could see the houses. Not only was this scavenger hunt a lot fun, it also really made our holiday memorable. We got to appreciate quality family time and see the beautiful Christmas decorations. Most holidays we are so busy with our own family’s busy schedules that we don’t ever have time to go enjoy others decorations. This year I encourage you to take time to appreciate the little things, count your blessings and, most importantly, spend time with loved ones.
