Causes of Learning Disabilities

Being told that your child has difficulty communicating his thoughts, is unable to make sense of information he reads, has difficulty writing, cannot focus his attention, or feels distracted by other sights and sounds can be overwhelming for any parent.  Having a child with a learning disability is a reality that parents often struggle in accepting and fully understanding.

Could it have been prevented? If I have a learning disability, will my child inherit it?” Knowing the cause of learning disabilities is something that researchers are still investigating.  No one is sure what causes learning disabilities [1], but information leads us to different possibilities.

Genetic Factors

It is not surprising to find that children with learning disabilities have parents or other relatives with similar difficulties. However, a parent’s learning disability may appear different from a child’s disability. For instance, a parent who has difficulty reading may have a child who has a writing disorder.  For this reason, scientists infer that specific learning disabilities are unlikely to be passed down directly from parent to child.

Despite the uncertainty that remains, studies suggest that most individuals with learning disabilities are affected or influenced by changes that take place during pregnancy and are often inherited. Research indicates that in about fifty percent of children, there appears to be differences in the wiring of the brain where subtle disturbances in the structures and functions of the brain are present.

However, current research points toward more diverse and complex causes related to difficulties in bringing together information from different brain regions. As to the other fifty percent of children with learning disabilities, the answers are yet to be discovered.
