Question: Don’t know if this is the right place to ask but…….can anyone recommend a good social skills board game? I’ve already got a couple and my son has been responding to them very well. I want more but they are pricey and don’t want to waste my limited funds. Thanks in advance.

Answers:

• Cathy M. Take a jenga game and write a question on each piece – “what’s your favorite color?”, ” do you have any brothers or sisters?”, “what city so you live in?”, etc. Each child takes a turn, asks a friend a question by name. That child had to respond in a full sentence, “I have 2 sisters and one brother.” The person asking the has to repeat the answer…”Oh,??, you have two sisters and one brother.” Works on taking turns, back and forth conversation, and listening and following directions. My son loves it!
• Yolanda R. Some children respond well to them. You have already mentioned that your son does so it you find that you have the resources to purchase them, then I would do so. Also check with admin if you can place an In Search Of post. Maybe someone here, or on another page, has one they are no longer using and can sell it to you for a reasonable price. And if they say you can’t maybe you can start a page for such things. If you do please add me. Or if you find one already set up please send me the link. Best of luck. I hope he continues to progress.
• Karen K. I went to google and typed in ‘ social skills board games for autism’ and there are lists
• Stacy A. Try looking on joshua centers website. They provide social skills classes and the director, Becky Ottinger,created social skills board games they use in the classes.They are very good!Just Google joshua center. It’s based in Kansas city!
• Beth-Ann B. Are they using some at school that you could borrow on the weekends?

• Robbin B. There is a Monopoly game that can be customized (you create the board cover , money, etc). I bought one & use Velcro dots to hold the ‘face’ on & have multiple faces/cards/etc printed out. I did one around the theme of Percy Jackson & another for math. The Toys R Us stores usually carry them.
• Sandy S. First Check within your state as well. Some states have services that allow people to try different products before buying them.
• Vanetta B. I go to a little flea market by my home they have board games for just a few dollars. They are used but everything is in tact. Works for me!
• Katherine B. We love any of the Uno games, Apples to Apples and any of the Cranium games
• Sandra C. Look into melissa and doug games.they have all kinds that pertain to learing different skill
• MaryBeth S. You should get “headbandz “, they use it in my sons pragmatics group and it’s helped a bunch!
• Marilyn D. My sons therapist used card games with his small group. Monopoly is good for turns, planning, handling excitement and disappointment.
• Laura C. Tetris comes in a board game and my son loves it -will even play by himself has alot of colors and easy to play but if you have a wii Wheel of fortune is cheap and wii sports excellent hand and eye coordination and build there ability to spell and process ahead of words.
• Debra G. at school and when I was a kid after my tbi a good game would be memory and as he turns the cards over have him say the name of the picture.
• Maggie B. There are a lot of books in special and general education that use social games to enhance learning. Check out your library and used books on Amazon.
• Lana Segal- M. I bought the hamburger game.at walmart.its fun,easy,my daughter with ds loves it.its an inexensive game.
