Q&A Ask Special Parents: Teaching Children with Down Syndrome How to Blow Their Nose

I have a daughter who is 14 and has Down Syndrome. I cannot teach her how to blow her nose and its driving me crazy; any advice would be great THANKS!!!!  ~Laurie S.

Many great ideas were shared: Lana Segal- My daughter is 12 with Down syndrome. I taught her how to blow her nose by copying me blowing a feather with my nose. It was a fun game and taught her the movement of blowing.

Jeanette Fabre Holahan- We used the feather idea when Sydney’s nose wasn’t runny. I laid on the floor next to her and I put the feather on my nose and covered my mouth with my hand. She was so tickled by watching the feather move. (tip…. buy a package of feathers at the hobby store and pick out the fluffy “downy” ones) BTW, this is a fun game to keep kids entertained at restaurants too while waiting for food.
